Email, Facebook

April 27th, 2009 | by Ben Parr

It hasn’t even been a day since Facebook opened up its developer API stream, but companies and applications have already jumped on the opportunity by expanding the functionality of their products. Just today, we’ve already highlighted the upcoming Facebook updates by Seesmic Desktop that will utilize the new Open Stream API.

Now, email management software Xobni, which we featured as a great implementation of Facebook Connect, has taken advantage of the new features as well. Starting later this evening, it will be possible to see the news feed items of your Facebook friends inside of Microsoft Outlook.

Xobni is a desktop software that creates profiles of all of your contacts, organizes them, and integrates with social networks and IM within Microsoft Outlook. It already integrates with Facebook (Facebook reviews), LinkedIn (LinkedIn reviews), and other networks by providing a way to look through social networking contacts. With the new additions Xobni is putting out later tonight, it will be possible to browse through the activities of your friends, comment on feed items, and like feed items, all from within the mail client.

Xobni Stream ImageThis is just one example of many things that developers could not do before Facebook’s Open Stream API. It’s impressive that Xobni could put out changes like this in so little time. Imagine what features and innovations Xobni and other social media companies release over the next few weeks and months. The Facebook innovation engine is churning at full speed.
